Sonya Messier is a commercial photographer with a passion for capturing the strength, beauty, and personality of trucks, heavy equipment, and the people who operate them. With over 15 years of experience, she has developed a signature style that blends technical precision with authentic storytelling.
From dusty backroads to high-profile shoots across North America, Sonya has collaborated with clients including Shell, Western Star Trucks, Kenworth Montréal, Michelin, Mack Trucks, and NRC. She is also the photographer behind the renowned Shell Rotella SuperRigs Calendar since 2019.
Sonya’s approach is grounded in preparation, creativity, and respect for the industry she documents. Whether it’s a sunrise shot on a job site or a dramatic portrait of a driver, she’s driven by one goal: to create images that feel powerful, human, and unforgettable.
And if there’s one thing she brings to every shoot, it’s energy. Having fun on set is part of her process — when everyone’s relaxed and enjoying the moment, the magic happens. Everyone’s in for a great ride!

I’m always looking for a way to create something extraordinary.
For me, pushing the limits isn’t about making an image complicated just for the sake of it. It’s about looking at a truck, a location, and a vision and asking myself: How can we make this something people will stop and enjoy seeing? Sometimes, that means finding an unexpected location. Sometimes, it means working with an incredible team to make an ambitious idea possible.
For one shoot, I wanted to photograph a beautiful flatbed truck with something completely unexpected in the background: a helicopter in flight. Making that image happen meant coordinating with an airport, working closely with an exceptional helicopter pilot, carefully planning the timing and positioning, and making the most of a very small window of opportunity.
The pilot was absolutely extraordinary. His precision, professionalism, and ability to work with us made it possible to capture the moment I had envisioned. And that is what I love about commercial photography. The best images often happen when a great idea meets the right people, the right team, and a willingness to push a little further.
I don’t want to simply photograph a truck. I want to create an image that makes people stop and look at the picture. A picture that tells a story.
